A New Name, The Same Mission: Introducing Shift2

In 2018, The Shore Foundation was founded as a student philanthropy project at RIT with a simple goal: refurbish computers and get them to people who need them. In 2023, we marked our fifth anniversary with a new name: Shift2.

As Executive Director Megan Alchowiak described it, the goal is to be the connection point as computers shift from being essential to a business into providing a pathway for someone in our community.

New York State Senator Jeremy Cooney (D-Rochester) recognized the milestone with a formal proclamation honoring our fifth anniversary and our new name. Since founding, we have provided more than 2,500 refurbished computers to schools and local organizations across the Rochester area.

The name Shift2 reflects exactly what we do. A shift is a change in direction. The 2 speaks to second chances, not just for devices, but for the people who receive them. And on a keyboard, Shift+2 creates the @ symbol, the icon for connection in our modern world.

The name has changed, but the mission has not. We are still here to close the digital divide, one device at a time.
