Our Shift2 computer intake process

With a focus on quality, we thoroughly and individually check each computer to ensure its in top-condition for the next owner.

Data is more than 1s and 0s. It is the vacation photos, business pitch documents, family recipes and Christmas wish lists.

Our detailed process at Shift2 ensures that each computer is protected and expertly handled from when it arrives, up, through and until it leaves our doors.

Every computer we receive at Shift2 goes through a process that matches (and even exceeds) the data cleaning standards set by the U.S. Government

At Shift2 we meet and exceed NIST 800-88 Guidelines which is the standard used by The U.S. Department of Defense. Our certified hard drive data erasure includes multiple random overwrites, firmware level erasure, freeze lock removal and full verification. Our process targets every portion of the drive during erasure, including remapped sectors and removes hidden areas. Every time an erasure is performed a Certificate of Erasure is issued to verify and certify that it was a success.

Almost all businesses today, require computers to operate.

Every device has a unique Shift2 asset tag barcode number.

Using the asset tag, our database collects the high-level computer details for each device (make, model, serial number, donor company, date received) and the record is updated throughout the process.

After the device is received and asset tagged, it enters the data erasure stage. When the hard drive erase concludes, the record is updated with date/time of data erasure and a corresponding Certificate of Destruction. Failed-to-erase hard drives are swiftly removed from the device and physically destroyed to prevent any data loss.

In addition, we have quality check stickers that are placed on the lip of the laptop lid to call attention to any cosmetic or functional issues identified during the process.
